Point a domain to your VPS

Use your own domain (like myshop.com) instead of the default URL. The steps depend on whether your VPS is on the shared IP (the default) or has a dedicated IP.

On the shared IP (the default) — use a CNAME

This is the managed path: we handle HTTPS for you, no certificate files.

  1. In the dashboard, open your VPS and add your domain under Add domain / custom domain. We'll show you the CNAME target to use.
  2. At your domain's DNS provider, create a CNAME record pointing your hostname (e.g. www) to that target.
  3. Save and wait for DNS to propagate — usually a few minutes. HTTPS is issued automatically once it resolves.

Make sure your app is serving on port 80 inside the VPS — we terminate HTTPS in front of it.

On a dedicated IP — use an A record

If your VPS has a dedicated IPv4, point an A record for your domain straight at that IP. Then run your web server (Nginx / Caddy / Apache) and issue certificates yourself, exactly as on any server.

Apex vs www (the common gotcha)

Most DNS providers won't let you put a CNAME on the root/apex domain (myshop.comwith no subdomain). Two clean options:

  • Use your provider's ALIAS / ANAME / “CNAME flattening” record on the apex (Cloudflare, Spaceship and many others support this).
  • Or point www.myshop.com with a CNAME and set the apex to redirect to www.

Tip: set up both www and the apex so visitors reach you either way.

It's not working yet

  • Give it time. DNS changes can take a few minutes to a couple of hours to spread.
  • Check the record. Look up your domain (e.g. dnschecker.org) and confirm it shows the CNAME target / A record you set.
  • Serving on port 80? For the shared-IP path, your app must listen on port 80 inside the VPS.
  • Still stuck after an hour? Open a ticket with your domain name and we'll get it live.
